Amerikaner – Black and White Cookies

My lil sis and I are going on a huge shopping trip tomorrow. We'll be spending about an hour in the car to get to Frankfurt, so I prepared some delicious provision for us: Black and White (and Pink) Cookies! Or, as we call them in Germany, Amerikaner. (If you want to know why, click here [German].)

Of course I wanted to make them like my grandma used to, but I couldn't find her recipe. However, this one turned out to be just as good! I made different icings, though.

Here's the video recipe:

  • 75 g soft butter

  • 100 g sugar

  • 8 g vanilla sugar

  • any kind of additional vanilla flavour that you prefer; about 1/4 of a vanilla bean or half a teaspoon of vanilla extract, I'd say

  • a pinch of salt

  • 2 eggs

  • 250 g flour

  • 3 smooth tsps baking powder

  • 100 ml milk

  • 250 g icing sugar, divided into three bowls

  • lemon juice

  • red juice, whichever you like best

  • cocoa powder

  • a couple of tablespoons of milk

As you can see in the video, I didn't have exact measurements for the icing, and the red one turned out to be a bit too thin. I could have added more icing sugar to thicken it (which would have looked nicer on the pics), but as I don't really like a thick layer of icing anyway, I left it that way. If you're doing icing for the first time and you're not sure of how much fluid to use, go slow and only add a few drops at a time. You need much less than you might think!
